Room Selection: FAQ
Q: How do I know if I’m eligible to participate in Room Selection? A: Students who are eligible were notified through an email in March. A Room Selection insert will be put in their campus PO Box on April 11th. An eligible student is defined as a first year student who met the housing application deadline, all other subsequent deadlines and housed as of September 27, 2007. Scholars who have continued to maintain the status of their four-year housing guarantee are also eligible.
Q: Where are emails sent? A: All correspondence about Room Selection will be sent to your UCSD email account. Students should check it frequently between March & May. Emails will not be sent again if they get “bounced-back” for some processes. Students must be responsible for making sure that they can receive email at their UCSD email account.
Q: Is there going to be All Campus Housing? A: Yes. There will be a limited number of All Campus Housing spaces available. Please check out the information on the All Campus link above for dates and details.
Q: How do I know what spaces are available? A: Students should check with their College Residence Life Office about available spaces. The Friday before Room Selection, students can click on the “Current Spaces Available” link to see what apartments are available and can also check back during Room Selection to see spaces that are partially filled, full or still empty.
Q: What day does each College have Room Selection? A: Room Selection Day is May 20, 2008 for all 6 Colleges. Start times will vary by College, but all students will be able to select their on-campus housing space on that day. I-House Room Selection and All Campus Room Selection are May 13, 2008.
Q: How do I apply for Room Selection? A: All eligible students will go to the Room Selection website and be able to complete their application for Room Selection. Being eligible does not mean a student will automatically be assigned to a space on-campus. Students MUST fill out their Personal History Form, electronically sign their housing contract and make the $650 prepayment (via E-Check or payment coupon). Failure to complete any of the above will result in the loss of their housing guarantee and the ability to select a space on Room Selection Day.
Q: When will I receive my access code and lottery time? A: Students will receive their access code and lottery time via their UCSD email account the Thursday before Room Selection (May 15th). Those participating in I-House Room Selection will receive their access code and lottery time on Thursday, May 8th.
Q: What is a lottery time? A: All students who complete their application (PHF, contract and $650 prepayment) will receive a random lottery time. Lottery times are assigned within a College. Since students can only select from spaces available at their College, students from different Colleges could have the same lottery time. Lottery times are in 5 minute increments.
Q: What if I lose my access code? A: During the Room Selection Sign-Up process, students can receive their access code again if they have lost it by clicking on the “Forgot Access Code?” link. They will need to enter their PID and UCSD email address. The access code will be sent to their UCSD email account. Students can also visit their Residence Life Office in person in order to receive it.
Q: What if I can’t login at my designated lottery time to select a room? A: Students can login anytime after their designated lottery time and up to midnight on room selection day to select a room. However, students that choose to login later than their specified time should know that they will have a smaller selection of spaces to choose from.
Q: How do I get to live with my friends? A: Students that wish to live together should go through the process together. One member of your group will login on Room Selection Day and add everyone as a roommate. The only way to be added as a roommate is by giving someone your access code. If you are added into a group and they do not have your permission, those students will face disciplinary action and the cancellation of their housing space for 2008-2009. Students who are already in a group or have already selected into a space cannot be added.
Q: What happens if my selected roommates and I don’t fill an apartment? A: Students will be able to select into apartments that have spaces left. If your apartment isn’t full by the end of Room Selection it will be filled by someone during Room Change Day or off the waitlist.
Q: What if I forget to add someone? A: You must add all of your roommates at the beginning of the process (on Room Selection Day). As you go through the room sign-up process you will be asked to make sure that these are the students you wish to live with. There are no changes or exceptions! Once you confirm your selection, your assignment is final!
Q: How do I found out who I am living with? A: During the Room Selection Sign-Up process you can login after you have selected a space and see the students who have chosen into your apartment. A separate site after Room Selection will be open for one week in order for students to see who they are living with. Check the website for this link in late May!
Q: Can I change rooms if I don’t like what has been selected? A: Once you and/or your roommates have selected a space, you must confirm it. Up until you confirm your space, you can make changes if needed. After you confirm your selection, your assignment is final! There are no changes! Check with your College Residence Life Office about Room Change Day.
Q: Do some students receive priority for Room Selection? A: All eligible students who complete their application, contract and $650 prepayment can participate in selecting a space on Room Selection Day. There is no priority system for students. All have an equal chance of getting early lottery times and all are guaranteed a space on campus.
Q: What if I want to cancel my housing contract? A: Please refer to the “Cancellation Policy” listed under Contracts/prepayments on the Room Selection website. You can also contact the Housing Administrative Services Office at 858.534.4010 or at housinginfo@ucsd.edu.
Q: What happens if I don’t electronically sign my housing contract or I don’t make the $650 prepayment? A: Students who do not electronically sign their housing contract or make their $650 prepayment will not be able to select a space on Room Selection Day. Your housing contract is not valid unless you have also made your $650 prepayment. There are no exceptions!
Q: What options do I have for making my $650 prepayment? A: You can choose to pay by E-Check or by printing out a payment coupon. We highly encourage you to use the E-Check option. However, you are responsible for making sure that you have made a payment. Make sure you that you have sufficient funds available and if you receive any error messages during the process, you must be sure to correct them before the May 1 deadline.
